The Town of Jupiter incorporated on 1925, the area where the town now sits was originally named for the Hobe Indian tribe which lived at the mouth of the Loxahatchee River, and whose name is also preserved in the name of nearby Hobe Sound.

The name of Jupiter derives from a series of mapmakers misunderstandings: the first one was the Spanish spelling 'Jobe' of the Indian name 'Hobe' and recorded it as 'Jove'. Subsequent mapmakers further misunderstood this to be the Latin translation of the god Jupiter, and they anglicized the name from Jove to 'Jupiter' The Roman god Jupiter is the chief Roman god.

The most notable landmark is the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, completed in 1860. Made of brick, it was painted red in 1910 due to discoloration caused by humidity. Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 sandblasted the paint from the upper portion of the tower, and the tower was repainted using a potassium silicate mineral coating. The lighthouse is often used as the symbol for Jupiter.

Jupiter is has 7 miles of open free beaches from the Jupiter Inlet to Juno Beach. With the rare exception of Ocean Trail, nothing is built on the beaches, with many parks, benches, showers and even pet facilities along A1A.

Jupiter has some of the best schools in Palm Beach County, a great library, aquatic center and the Town of Jupiter activity center which are all open to the residents. The Town of Jupiter has the most green area and parks of any city of it’s size in Florida. It’s a great spot for families and retirees, located just 25 minutes to the Palm Beach Intl Airport, or 70-85 miles to F. Lauderdale or Miami and everything those areas have to offer.

And of course if fishing is an interest, with Jupiter’s many waterways, the Loxahatchee River and the Atlantic Ocean offer the best of either deep sea or inland fishing for the many species of fish, lobster, crab and shellfish.

Shopping is near Jupiter in the Gardens mall and world famous Worth Avenue on Palm Beach is 30 minutes south.
