Pinecrest first became known for its proximity to the Overseas Railroad that Henry Flagler built. Later in the early 1900s, it became a popular tourist attraction because of Parrot Jungle and Gardens. This attraction has flourished and was recently bought by the City of Pinecrest to incorporate it as Pinecrest Gardens. Pinecrest was home to the Miami Serpentarium, which was open for many years and closed in the 1980s.

Pinecrest grew as a residential area in the middle of the last century as construction began on new houses. These houses were built as ranch style homes and added to the pleasant living environment that Pinecrest aimed to and continues to create.

Pinecrest consists mostly of English speakers, but also has some of the nation’s larger percentages of Cubans, Nicaraguans and Colombians.

The city has recently finished projects for improving the city including creating new parks, planting trees and repaving roads. Pinecrest aims to emphasize “living green” and protecting the environment. It was named “Tree City USA” due to the efforts in plating trees by the city’s leaders and hosts the Pinecrest Earth day Festival. The already top performing schools make efforts to “built green” throughout the educational community.
