This city is rich with history beginning as a home for the Tequesta Indians and the later the Seminole Indians. After the Seminole War, no Native Americans remained in the area and pioneers gradually started developing the land in the 1940s. Farmer’s would buy large plots of land in the undeveloped area and nickname them “plantations,” which eventually led to the city’s name.

Over time the population increased and Plantation created an advanced irrigation system that is still used all over the world today, contributing to its modern-day slogan “the grass is always greener.” This also stems from the present and historic golf courses that attract many to Plantation.

Plantation today is a well developed city known for its shopping malls and employment opportunities. Companies such as Motorola, American Express, and Florida Power and Light all have major offices here. Additionally, Plantation is home to Plantation General Hospital and Westside Regional Medical Center to serve its residents and surrounding communities.

The central location of Plantation enables many to commute to Ft. Lauderdale. This city provides a pleasant suburban neighborhood with many public schools and a branch of the Broward County Library. To commemorate the history of Plantation, you can visit the Historical Museum and learn how Plantation became the prosperous, growing city it is today.

Plantation aims to become “greener” as referenced in the city slogan. They are making strides toward helping the environment including hosting a farmer’s market every Saturday. Residents also enjoy spending time outdoors in the city’s Central Park, which has a baseball field, swimming pool and tennis courts.
