In the 1800s Kissimmee was popular for building ships and was a center for transport, mostly through ship. Towards the end of the 19th century, they built a railroad that went through the area, but devastated the shipping industry. Freezing temperatures also left their citrus destroyed and the area was only used for raising cattle. Cattle were the main staple of the Kissimmee economy until nearby Walt Disney World opened in the 1970s.
